RickB sorry for the delay in the response. Been really busy at work. I have many questions but will try to be breif. First is the 2120 a reallt rugged tractor? The dealers I have been to claim they are. Second Which transmission will last longer the 12x4 or the 12x12? Third is the backhoe (759c) rugged? I have not seen(not even a picture)of this hoe at all. I did see the 7309 loader and that is looks really rugged. Fourth is it true that all the drivetrain and hydralic oil is the same? If it is is seems really hand to not have many diffent oil buckets kicking around. I'm also planning on getting the the complete service manuals. Fifth what all steel cab do you recomend? If there is anything else of importance please let me know. Many thanks in advance for you time.

The NH 2120 is a very sturdy tractor. Its success is evidenced by the fact that it has not been discontinued, but is still offered along with its new generation, the TC40 and TC45. The 12X12 Hydraulic Shuttle Shift transmission option is the ONLY one to consider. Extended clutch life is virtually guaranteed because the shuttle can be used to start, stop, and change direction. The multiple-disc wet clutch packs in the reverser will far outlast the dry disc clutch, given the same # of cycles. The matching backhoe and loader are built to easily handle the tractor's capabilities. Transmission, hydraulics, and rear axle all draw from a common sump. Bradco makes an ultra heavy duty backhoe with full-frame subframe for both loader and hoe. This set-up can also employ a crankshaft- mounted hydraulic pump and external reservoir. This rig is designed for commercial use, and is priced accordingly. Sims and Curtis are the two major suppliers of aftermarket cabs, I am not impressed with either. Laurin out of Ontario, Canada makes a very nice ROPS cab, though I have never seen one on a 2120; and they are considerably more $ than the other 2. ....

Thanks for the info. I still have a question about the two types of transmissions. This is what I understand so far; the clutch on the 12x4 is like a two stage (half way down will disengage the transmission (pto still working)) all the way down disconnects both pto and transmission. On the 12x12 the clutch is not two stage to disconnect the transmission you put the shuttle lever into neutral (pto is still working) to disconnect both just push in the clutch. What I just explained is my understanding (it may be wrong). This is what concerns me is if you have a pto implement (lets say a snow blower) and you are moving along a flat (pto operating) and you start to go up hill an the snow gets drifty, the tractor starts to "bog" down. At this point you have to shift to a lower gear. If you have the 12x12 transmission if you step on the clutch you blower will stop (with a full "load" of snow) you then release the clutch with a lowe gear now the engine has to start to move and start the "full" blower. On the 12x4 if you step half way on the clutch you blower still works and you can shift to a lower gear. I guess this best way to go would be a hst. As far as the 2120 goes it probably a compromise just like most things in life. Your input would be great. Will be ordering the tractor most likely middle of this week. Thanks again.
Are there any other people with a 2120 out there??

Your description is accurate for the two transmissions, as far as it goes. With the 12X12 HSS and a need to shift up or down without disengaging the PTO, shift the shuttle to 'N', shift to the appropriate gear, and shift the shuttle back to F or R. No foot clutch. No interrupted PTO. There is a Mode Command switch that will modulate the shuttle engagenment, if you prefer a softer shift. This transmission will be more efficient at transmitting power to the ground than a hydro with equal engine HP. ....

We are very disappointed with our 2120. The clutch chewed itself up after only 258 of relatively light use costing us $1400.00 This is not our first tractor. We had aFord 2000 for over 30 years without ever having to replace the clutch so its not like we abused it. Ours has the HST. In the future we'l try to use the clutch less replying instead on the shuttle shift. ....
